First Snow

First Snow
24"x30"
Oil on Linen

The painting was influenced by the late evening long shadows. The snow takes on so many colors in the shadows and shapes created by a light source. Using the square brush, I painted the various shapes and tilted the horizon for more design interest.

Among the Trees

Oil on Linen
24"x36"

I have started a new series of more fragmented color shapes in the landscape. I plan to explore the subject with various color palettes. In this painting almost every color is greyed down with a mix of "bluf" made by Vasari and Gamblin Mars Black.

Montana Cabin

Oil on Panel
12"x16"

This was the cabin that the six artists stayed in for a week to paint and view the sites, mainly Yellowstone. The cabin is located on the J Bar L Ranch owned by one of the granddaughters of the Rockefellers. The ranch is in the very Southern area of Montana near Idaho and Wyoming. With 20,000 acres, it took 2 hours just to drive across the rand from East to West.

Early Morning at the Ranch

Oil on panel
12"x16"

During the first part of the week we drove to the ranch to see the cowboys prepare the horses for the morning work. There were horses coming in from a night on the range to be fed and saddled. There were many photo opportunities and as I turned I saw this view of the moon with this strange color in the sky.

Yellowstone

Oil on Panel
12"x16"

Midweek, we drove to Yellowstone to view the absolute wonders of this park. I set up my painting gear on the side of the road and painted this great view. Impossible to capture the feeling of the vast space, the running water, the fly fishermen wading into the waters, the animals roaming about. And, not forgetting the raven, about 18" long that was determined my palette had colored food for him.

Montana Barn

Oil on Panel
12"x16"

This was another painting that took almost an hour to find. We drove across the ranch and turned North to reach the end of the 20,000 acres to find this barn sitting nicely on a hill with the Aspen trees behind.

Idaho Aspen

Oil on Panel
12"x16"

This was the final painting during the Montana trip. We had to drive for almost an hour to get to the wooded area. When I saw this area, I knew this was the set up. Stood in the road and painted for about two hours. The Aspen were just starting to change. The area was about 100 yards into Idaho.

November Evening in Indiana

Oil on Linen
24"x36"

I was asked to do a larger Winter painting for a photo session this week. My smaller plein air canvases are prepped with an orange background, but for this studio painting, I started with a dark blue background. It's always interesting working in a different manner and analyzing color as the painting builds. For this landscape, I wanted to show the snow in the last light of the day as well as the dark trees silhouetted against the sky.

Wisconsin Road

Oil on Panel
24"x18"

This painting was completed in my studio after returning from the  Door County Paintout. It was interesting there driving some of the back roads. I could see a house back to the left that this road led to and after setting up, sure enough a woman drove out to see what I was doing. I used the small study to create this work with a more inviting sky. The original session ended in a hard and long rain.

Drove to Brown County yesterday to paint the house of T. C.  Steele. Always a magic place to paint and be with the spirit of a great painter.

Western Sky West of Noblesville

Oil on Panel
16"x20"

This was the painting I completed for the Noblesville Paint-Out a few weeks ago. It was actually my second painting and came off better than the first. No fuss and only had 1.5 hours to finish before judging. Won a merit award...pleased with that.

Earth Layers II

Oil on Linen
30'x40'

Reworked this painting after getting it back from a show. I hated to break my rule of going back instead of moving on to a new one, but thought the changes were worth it.

Added note: Just heard today that it was accepted into the 2013 Hoosier Salon.

Backyard Mosaic

Pastel
15"x22"

Continuing with pastel this week working out some new patterns and compositions. I like the softness of the pastel and the ability to build color with the density of the mark.

New Harmony Country Road

Pastel
16"x21"

This is a pastel painting I did coming back from the New Harmony Paint-out. This may be the finish study for the "Field to Finish" Exhibition 2014 Exhibition.

Into the Woods

Oil on Panel
14"x18"

I made the annual trek to New Harmony for the First Brush of Spring Paint-out. This was one of the works on the Old Dam Road leading to the Wabash River. Update: this work was also juried into the 2013 IHA Exhibit in Nashville, IN.

Door County 2013

This will be my ad that will appear in the Door County Plein Air Festival Program Book. It is a true for honor to receive the invitation and paint with 39 excellent painters from around the United States. The event is in July and attracts many visitors. I painted there two years during the heat wave with temperatures in the 90s and it was an effort to finish two paintings a day. The event is sponsored by the Peninsula School of Art and the dates are June 22-27.

Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night
Oil on Linen
20"x30"

This impressionistic landscape of a winter evening is in homage to our dear friend, Maxine Williams, whose full and vibrant life is on the horizon. As the poet Dylan Thomas so aptly wrote and "Mackie" has admirably fulfilled, "Rage, rage against the dying of the light."

Snow Field in Southern Indiana

SOLD
30"x40"
Oil on Linen

I wanted to capture the look of an early November snow with one of the late day sunsets. If you have driven South along I-65, south of Shelbyville and looked to the West, you have probably seen something similar.

Confetti Landscape II

30"x40"
Oil on Linen

I started this painting with the idea of Southwest colors and almost every color has parts of Vasari Adobe Hue. This knocked the chroma down and it was a matter of creating puzzle like shapes with contrasting hues. There was no attempt at atmospheric perspective as I didn't want the background to get too chalky. The other challenge was the design and breakup of spaces directing the eye to the horizon.

Autumn Glow

24"x30"
Oil on Linen

This was a studio work with aggressive brush work and working
alla prima to complete the painting in about 5 hours. I continue to explore color relationships and intensities.

Fractal Layers II

SOLD
Oil on Linen
30"x40"

Normally it is difficult to find motivation in a painting that is a larger version of a smaller work. But,   in the case of this commission it moved quickly with a few changes that made it interesting.

Indiana Patches

30"x40"
Oil on Linen

The last painting of 2012. I am starting to explore the shapes and patterns from Indiana farms and gardens and placing them into an overall design of contrasting color and shape.
