The Tall Sycamores

This is the first painting I have been able to work on since getting the shingles in late September. The lines appear a bit shaky because of the pain medication I am still taking. Either I get over this thing, or the next few paintings may appear a little more abstract.

Zionsville Hollyhocks

12"x16"
Oil on Canvas Board

For the last three years I have been driving over to Zionsville to paint hollyhocks that have been growing in one of the resident's yards. This time around a young woman came out of the house to see what I was doing. She had moved in during the Winter and said she was quite shocked when the flowers started growing. Does anyone ever plant these flowers as they are rare to see in modern gardens.

Last Light

12"x16"
Oil on Panel

This is a plein air painting I did last summer and recently reworked the color as well as bump the contrast a bit. I also have started using the cold wax in the mix with my paints.

Black Bamboo

SOLD

Oil on Linen
30"x40"

As I started the design, I was reminded of the bamboo grove I have  near the studio. It was interesting to play the strong vertical shapes against the warm/cool and light/dark colors. I thought of Munsell among the trees.

T. C. Steele

Oil on Canvas Board
12"x16"

This was the painting I completed at the 2013 T. C Steele Paint Out. Always enjoying painting on his property as I feel the spirit of him paint in his nearby studio every time I've been there.

Autumn Walk Through

Oil on Linen
30"x40'

After completing the smaller version, "Over the Hill" I wanted to do a larger version. I changed the ratio of sky/ground with more pattern creeping in with the curves of the limbs.

Landscape Patterns

Oil on Linen
30"x40"

The painting is a continued exploration of abstract patterns and shapes in the landscape.

Zionsville Path

Oil on Canvas
24"x24"

I was gett ing ready to send several paintings to Steeple Gallery and realized I had not photographed a painting completed last summer South of Zionsville. The path back through the field is always a mystery as to where it goes and who may choose to walk it.

Just Over the Hill

SOLD
Oil on Linen
40"x23"

Continuing the series. Started out as a 40"x30", but I didn't like the bottom and the horizon ended up at the middle point. I liked the spatial contrast better with this crop. Of course, now I have to adjust the stretcher and stretch again.

January Ground Cover

24"x36"
Oil on Linen

The 2014 Winter has been a record breaker with one snow storm followed by another. With little or no traffic in the gallery, I have been painting in my studio. This image is based on my many looks at Indiana fields covered with snow, melting slightly before the next blanket of white.

Into the Woods

24"x36"
Oil on Linen

This is a smaller version of the Secret Passage painting completed a few weeks ago. This work has the same color palate, but with slight changes to the various color passages. Also need a smaller version as the entries this year for the Indiana Artists Exhibition are going to be 38" max in dimension.

Secret Passage

30"x40"
Oil on Linen

Secret Passage is all about laying down soft, low key colors and creating a space that leads the eye through the entire painting. It also brings back the fond memories of walking in the woods as a child, moving branches, creating a path and finding an opening to the field void of trees.

Field of Dreams

30"x40"
Field of Dreams

This was completed during the snowstorm of January, 2014. With 3 days in my studio, I wanted to continue the exploration of color and design in the modern landscape.
