Sunning on a Sunday

Sunning on a Sunday
24"x24"
Oil/Cold Wax
Craddle Board

Back in the studio with major changes. Started this on Friday and returning Sunday, the painting took on a completely different look. I like the texture with 3 layers of paint. Creativity is not about plowing ahead to the finish, but listening to what the painting has to say.

Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum

Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum

Oil/Cold Wax

This was a work using complement colors. Josef Albers was the master artist and teacher at Bauhaus in Germany and later at Black Mountain College and Yale.

Round About

Oil/Cold Wax

This work was motivated by the number of Round Abouts in Hamilton Count and Carmel. They are fun to drive with sports cars and it seems very whimsical with cars turning in front of you. The painting has several layers using a mix of oil paint and cold wax.

Pushing the design a bit, I introduced some small graphic elements to create a whimsical feel to the work.

Back to You Mark Rothko

Back to you Mark Rothko
Oil/cold Wax
30"x24"

Anytime a design appears in a work of art we are influenced by everything done before us. In this case I thought of Mark Rothko and his series of canvases. He died in 1970 at the age of 66. Kind of wonder what he would have done in the 70s. So...my imagining working with Rothko as a mentor and me as his grad student taking the painting in for a critique. Never too old to learn, Back to You Mark Rothko.

Sun and Done

Sun and Done
Oil/Cold Wax
36"x24"

After the gesso was applied I put in the grid again and started with paint and cold wax mixture. Several colors were applied to get the "feel" of the effect I was going for. There are random scratched marks applied while the paint was still wet.

Practise Makes Perfect
Oil/Cold Wax
24"x24"

This work was a follow up to "Love is All You Need." The cradled panel has a red and orange acrylic applied over the gesso. The green was mixed and while still wet the calligraphic marks were applied.

Oil/Cold Wax

I had a little fun with this painting, first painting the cradle board with gesso following with various acrylic colors . I then mixed enough paint to scrape the grid and follow with the calligraphic marks. I liked the contrast between the structure of the grid with contrasting flowing marks.

Munsell Plot Plan

Munsell Plot Plan
Oil/Cold Wax
16"x12"

For this painting I used a cradle panel and applied the paint with brush. After the gesso application, I used several acrylic colors. After painting each color an shape I scraped through the paint with a roller ball pen. The tribute to Munsell was his experiment and classifying each color with a name for hue and value as well as chroma or brightness of color

In or Out

In or Out
Oil/Cold Wax
8"x8"

I have started experimenting with cold wax with oil paint. There are endless possibilities and I am starting with the smaller cradle panels. In or Out was completed flat and applying the paint with a palette knife.
